The ancient Chinese game of Mahjong is an interesting game, which is largely based on skill and strategy and leaves very little to chance. While you can find different variations of this game on the internet, the basic goal of Mahjong remains the same – to match the players’ tiles with the ones in the Mahjong wall and complete the ensemble. Winning this game needs the right combination of skill and strategy. Here are a few tips that you can use.

Choose a Version You are Comfortable Playing
The first thing to do before choosing an online Mahjong game is look for different versions of the game, go through the rules of each and choose one that you’re most comfortable with. Although most of the versions have a similar format, the rules could be slightly different. The different versions of online Mahjong you can choose from include the classic Chinese Mahjong, American Mahjong, European Classical Mahjong, Hong Kong Mahjong, Riichi Mahjong (Japanese) and Taiwanese Mahjong.

Although these games are largely similar, there might be a difference in the number of tiles, strategies and the rules of scoring.

Know About the Different Tiles

To play Mahjong strategically, you need to understand the different tiles that are used in the game. Usually, there are three different tile suits that represent characters, dots and bamboos; four directional or wind tiles for north, east, west and south; three cardinal or dragon tiles in red, green and white; and finally the bonus tiles divided into four flowers and four seasons.

In a set of 144 tiles, you will find 36 bamboo tiles, 36 character tiles, 36 dot tiles, 16 wind tiles, 12 dragon tiles and 8 bonus tiles. Each of these tiles has a different score, depending on the version you choose.

Understand the Rules and Terminology Used

Before you play the game for real money, you should play the free games to familiarize yourself with the terms used in it. Commonly used Mahjong terms include wall, pair, pung, kong, and chow. To know in detail about the game, you should read the terms and conditions before playing.

Scoring

As different versions of the game can have different scoring rules, you should keep in mind that particular scoring chart in mind and play to get the highest score. Each tile has a base score, and your total score is increased by the base value of the tile multiplied by half the number of tiles you have. An ideal strategy would be to try and remove the high value tiles and increase your score right in the beginning to get a higher overall score.

Also, try to remove all the tiles as it can get you an added bonus. If you like to play for money on your phone, perhaps you should check this site for the biggest mobile gambling bonuses…

Be Alert

To benefit from this game, you need to be fast and alert while making a calculated move. Be careful when moving the tiles on top – try not to give an opening to your opponents, and try to pair your tile with each move made by them. When playing solo, ensure that you make the right matches on top so that you can uncover the high scoring tiles underneath and clear all of them on time.

Winter Mahjong: The More You Play This Game The More You Like It

Winter Mahjong is a computerized Mahjong Solitaire game based on the theme of winter. The tiles and the whole look and feel of the game reflect the winter season. This game is played with tiles that are placed on a board and the main objective of the game is to remove all the tiles from the board like in other Mahjong games.

The unique aspect of this game lies in the way the tiles are placed. In this, the tiles are placed in piles i.e. they are stacked together. As you match and remove the tiles on the top, the ones placed below get exposed and then again those tiles need to be removed by matching with similar tiles. This is how the game moves on. The game is challenging and interesting and involves strategic and analytic thinking. This game also involves some luck but the player should know the right techniques to win it.

In Winter Mahjong all the fun lies in eliminating all the tiles from the board within the shortest possible time to get a high score.

The classic or original Mahjong game was also played with such similar tiles but the concept of the game was entirely different. To play the Winter Mahjong game, the player needs to choose two similar Mahjong tiles and then they are eliminated from the game. In order to remove a tile at least one side of the tile must be free, either the left side or the right side and it should not have a tile placed above it. Tiles are removed by clicking on them. The main goal of the game is to clear the playing field of all tiles.

There are many levels of this game and as a player moves from one level to another the games gets more difficult and fun. There is a time limit to finish the game so the game gets over either if the allotted time gets over or the player manages to remove all the tiles from the board within the given time. This game even has an option called “Hint”, if the player clicks this option the computer helps the player to decide which tile to move.

As Winter Mahjong is a solitaire game only one player is required. This game is easy and can be played by anyone irrespective of age. There are many more online Mahjong Solitaire Games, but this one has its own magic.

Mahjong, which is an ancient Chinese game of skill and strategy, is also popular in online gaming sites and casinos. Owing to its popularity, many online casinos have started offering online Mahjong to their players for free and also for real money. Maybe you could use some of your bonuses to pay for your first real mahjong game!

If you have enjoyed playing this game for free, possess the necessary skills and are aware of the key strategies, you can now play it at an online casino for winning some real money. However, depending on the variation of this game you’re playing, you could even get a bit lucky with your strategies.

How to Play Mahjong

Mahjong is a matching game that is usually played with 4 players, although the Japanese solo version can be played by a single individual. A game of Mahjong is usually has 4 people playing against each other, where each player is given a set of 13 tiles. The four players take the four sides and a Mahjong wall, which is a set of 24 face-down tiles, is set in the middle. To win a game of Mahjong, all you need to do is find matching pairs for the 13 tiles you have and clear away your set.

There are 136 tiles made of four suits in classic Chinese Mahjong, and the player who clears all his tiles first wins. Solo Mahjong has 144 tiles that are face up, and single player has to match the two identical tiles from the top or side, without disturbing the remaining tiles.

Online Mahjong

Online Mahjong is similar to live Mahjong except that you would be using virtual tiles and playing the game on your computer. To play online Mahjong, all you need to do is find an online casino offering this game, and create an account with them. You may have to download the software for multiplayer Mahjong, but most sites let you play solo Mahjong using flash software. Mahjong can be played either for free or for real money.

Popular Online Mahjong Variations

There are different ways to play Mahjong, although the most common online version is the Hong Kong or the Cantonese Mahjong. Following are some of the variations of Mahjong you can play online.

Classical Chinese Mahjong – Classical Chinese Mahjong is perhaps the oldest format of Mahjong from which the other versions have been derived. This format consists of 136 tiles, and is played in 4 rounds, with each player having 13 tiles to discard.

Solo Mahjong – This is a popular version of Mahjong that is found on the internet. As the name goes, this game is played by a single player, whose aim is to clear all the tiles by matching them. The player starts off with a ready hand and has to find the right tiles from the wall, which has 24 face-down tiles, to match his set of 13 for a win.

American Mahjong – The American version of Mahjong is a lot different from the classic Chinese game. American Mahjong has 166 tiles, and is played by four players with each getting 14 tiles. The game also involves use of dice racks, jokers, score cards etc, with rules that are different from the Chinese version.

When you have exhausted yourself playing the usual casino games like Roulette or slots, or trying to work out which is the the best iPhone Casino on your new iPad, then you may decide to play some thing a little more interesting like the age-old game of Mahjong, which is now available on the web as well.

Mahjong is an ancient Chinese game and much of its history is shrouded. The game could be as old as 2,500 years, with many people believing that it was invented by the great Chinese philosopher Confucius. The game was actually banned in China after the Communist Revolution in the late 1940s. It was branded as a ‘capitalist pastime’. But the Cultural Revolution that happened almost 20 years later in China revived the game.

Mahjong reached the United States in the 20th century, and is now widely played with a revision in the basic rules. These days, the game has taken a number of names like ‘Game of Thousand Intelligences’ ‘Pung Chow’ etc.

Different variations of Mahjong

The game of Mahjong has seven primary versions popular today. They are the Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Riichi Competition, European Classical, American and Western Classical versions.

Chinese Mahjong: Even though the Chinese version has different variations, there is an official version of the game. It was so designated by the State Sports Commission of China and was declared as the 255th official sport of China in January 1998. The official version was created in such a way that the rules of many dissimilar versions were merged, paving the way for a single game

Hong Kong Mahjong: The Hong Kong version of the game is also known as Cantonese version, believed by enthusiasts of the game to be its most popular version. The Hong Kong version has striking similarities with the American version of the game. But it does not include Charleston or the joker tile, which sets it apart from its American counterpart.

Taiwanese Mahjong: The Taiwanese version varies considerably from other forms of the game with its unique set of rules that include 16-tile hands instead of the 13-tile hands usually used.

Riichi Competition: The modern version of Japanese Mahjong is known as Riichi Competition as this version is used in Japanese tournaments. The name is derived from the ‘riichi’, which is used in the modern Japanese version. Riichi means a ‘ready hand’.

European classical Mahjong: The European Classical version is more or less similar to the classical Chinese version. It involves blind selection of the ‘wind’ tiles while determining the seating. This is a variation from the basic version that involves rolling of the dice.

American Mahjong: The American version evolved from the classical Chinese version. This version has been adopted by the National Mah Jongg League and the American Mah-Jongg Association. The American Mahjong is largely different from the traditional version of the game. The game involves the use of Joker tiles, the Charleston rule and has an intermingling of five or more tiles.

Western Classical Mahjong: This version of Mahjong was introduced to the United States by Joseph P. Babcock, a representative of the Standard Oil Company in Shanghai, in the 1920s. The game has undergone further changes, with the Western Classical version based on the Wright-Patterson rules and other variants of Babcock’s rules.

The World Series of Mahjong is the largest mahjong tournament in the world offering the biggest cash prize purse to the winning player. The first tournament was held in the year 2007 in Macau and ever since, the tournament has been held in different resorts across Macau.

While the second WSOM held in 2008 had the highest prize money of one million dollars in the history of mahjong, this year the prize purse will be decided based on the number of participants registering for the even. The players who take the first 32 spots in the Main Event World Championship will be given the prize money based on their ranking. The person who occupies the first spot will not only receive the highest cash prize, he or she will also receive a World Champion necklace, a Venetian Mask from The Venetian Macao Resort and a free invitation to participate in the 2011 WSOM Main Event World Championship.

Anyone who knows how to play mahjong and is at least 21 years old can take part in the WSOM. This year the WSOM will follow the simplified WSOM rules for the 13-tile game. In addition, the scoring system will be such that it will be fair to all players. The scoring system is easy to understand and this will help players figure out how to play to win a high-scoring hand.

Here are some of World Series of Mahjong rules that have to be followed:

. The tournament will consist of different cycles and each cycle will consist of 4 hands. The deal will pass after each hand. In other words, the East will never repeat a deal.

. The tournament uses 136 tiles with the bonus tiles not being used. So, each player’s hand will consist of 13 tiles.

. When the wall is being built, each player has to build 17 stacks. However, if all players agree before the start of the game not to stack the tiles one on top of the other, then the tiles can be placed in two rows.

. Any tile discarded by a player has to be arranged properly from left to right in rows. Each row should contain 6 tiles.

. If a player has a claim, he or she has to say it aloud. If the claim is not said aloud, then the opponent can continue with his or her play. Also, if there is a Pung or Kong claim, it should be said immediately for the claim to take precedence.

. A player can claim a concealed Kong after he or she draws a tile. However, the player cannot claim a concealed Kong after making a claim for Chi or Pong. Also, a concealed Kong should be revealed immediately after it has been declared.

. Each player has three minutes in total to make all his or her plays. Each turn of a player should not take longer than 15 seconds.

. A player can have 2 types of winning hands — Regular hand and Irregular hand. A Regular hand is composed of 4 sets, where each set can be a sequence, triplet or Kong, and a pair. The Irregular hand can have Thirteen Terminals or Seven Pairs.

. In order for a player to win a hand, he or she should either have a Regular hand or an Irregular hand.

. Each player will be given a Pattern List Card to understand the scoring system used in WSOM. This card can be referred to during play or when the player has a winning hand.

. The WSOM has a no minimum requirement for winning a hand. In other words, a player can win a hand even though the hand does not contain any patterns. This hand will win 1 point and is known as a Chicken hand. However, most simple patterns are worth 5 points, while the bigger ones are worth 40 or more points.

There are several other World Series of Mahjong rules that a player needs to know in order to increase his or her odds of winning. It is best to get a handbook containing the different aspects of the scoring system followed by WSOM. Also, this handbook will give other relevant information on the code of behavior, the appealing system and the way a player should be dressed for the tournament. Also, players have to follow playing etiquette during the tournament.

The WSOM has 4 official languages, namely English, Chinese Mandarin, Chinese Cantonese and Japanese. All instructions and announcements during the tournament are made in all 4 languages.

A day before the tournament, WSOM allows the players to take part in practice games. During these games, the players will be informed about the rules for the tournament by the judges. This will help players understand the rules being followed by WSOM and the practice games are not counted as a part of the tournament.

If you know how to play Mahjong (American Mahjong), you know how to dance the Charleston. In fact, you will experience a lot more fun and excitement with the Mahjong Charleston. The Charleston in Mahjong is a pre-game tile swap, unique to the Mahjong rules in American Mahjong. This tile swap is a thrilling dance where a player swaps their unwanted tiles with another in the hope of getting closer to completing their hand. This tile swap is a mandatory part of the game. Let’s get down to the detailed dance.

Mahjong rules (American Mahjong) for the Charleston are as follows. Each player must swap three tiles facedown to their neighbor on the right. Next, each player swaps three tiles with the player opposite them. Then players must swap three more tiles to their left neighbor. This can be followed up by a second Charleston if all players are mutually agreeable. For the left passes only, a player may choose to perform a ‘Blind Pass’. In the ‘Blind’ Pass players may take one, two, or three tiles that are being passed to them and pass them to the player on the left without looking at the tiles. The upside to all this tile swapping is that there is a very good chance you’ll have a strong hand on your rack.

Understanding the Charleston dance is an important stepping stone towards learning how to play Mahjong.

Following the Charleston is a voluntary tile swap called the Courtesy Pass. Mahjong rules dictate that a maximum of three tiles can be swapped during the Courtesy Pass. The players must agree on the amount of tiles to be swapped in the Courtesy Pass. At this point the fun continues with the regular game.

This may sound confusing, but don’t worry, before long you will know how to play mahjongg. Once you learn how to play Mahjong, you will be rewarded with hours of addictive game play with friends and family.

Starting life as a spin-off venture for land-based casinos, the early days of online gambling and card games came into our lives via gaudy adverts and annoying popups. But now, online casinos are simply part of the culture, whether you’re a dab-hand with a bad hand, or a casual interloper playing some free games to see what all the fuss is about. The central appeal is that anyone can win. But if you’re new to this strange, exciting world, you might need some pointers to get going…

Start by choosing your online casino. Until you know what’s out there – and what scams to look out for – it’s best to stick with larger companies, who trade on their reputation rather than a quick buck. Skyvegas.com is a recent addition to the world of online gambling – as well as bingo and casino games, you can also visit SkyPoker.com to play poker.

Choose your game wisely. Internet casinos provide a wealth of options which can be quite bamboozling when you’re presented with them all. As well as the choice of games, you can also select the way in which you play them, whether it’s with a live dealer, on your own, or joining a game with other players. There’s a whole community out there – get to know them and you will pick up some valuable tips.

Playing casino games without staking money doesn’t really constitute gambling, but it can be great fun nevertheless. If you just want to dip your toe in, there are loads of sites offering free games. These are ideal if you want to get to know the game without the risk. It goes without saying, you must think carefully before you decide to stake your money on online betting – the thrill may not be worth it if you are too inexperienced to stand a chance of winning…

… So learn the rules. Thoroughly. It pays to have an excellent grasp of a game before you begin gambling – although luck is a key component of online betting most games – and especially poker – will involve an element of skill. Use the practice mode, and browse online betting articles (like this one!).

Most of all, enjoy yourself. This, after all, is what it’s all about. Go in with the right attitude – that’s to say, accept that the money you lose is a fair price for entertainment. Adjust the maximum loss you’re prepared to suffer accordingly, and stick to it. If you view any wins as a happy bonus rather than the endgame, then you’ll really never lose.
